You are right! Tubes and tires are porous. Once the tire is pressurized air molecules start to leak through the tube and tire walls until the pressure is equalized. Are you using an inflation device? Here’s the bad news: carbon dioxide molecules are among the smallest gases in the atmosphere. If you inflate tires with Co2, it will take a few days for your investment to pay off. Because the Stayfills gas molecules cannot migrate through the tube or tire, you will need to keep your tires properly inflated until you have a puncture.
Weekend warriors may argue that air is always free so why spend money on fancy gas? Stayfree is a system that allows you to sleep in and get on your bike. Your tubeless tires will be ready for you to start riding when you unload your bike. Pumping your tires is one less thing you have to do on your commute to work. Lightweight tires and tubes can air down over time, which is a benefit for marathoners or 24-hour racers. This increases the chance of getting a pinch flat.
Stayfill is still in pre-production, but should be available on shelves at your local dealers by the start of 2009. Stayfill is used in the computer sector. It is non-toxic, inert (wont cause any metal to erode rubber or carbon), and is safe for the environment. However, the makers are not yet revealing its name. Stayfill will set you back nine dollars for a 25-gram cartridge. But that’s not what the product is about. Stayfill is the gas that you use to fill your tires when your tires need to stay inflated for a prolonged period of time.
What do you think? When you consider the preparation and money that goes into a major event, nine dollars is an affordable investment. Stayfill helps keep your bike cool and comfortable, even when you are tired and have poor judgment. The possibility exists that Stayfill’s larger gas particles may increase the sealing power of latex-based tire sealants such as Stans NoTubes.
