Adopt-Abed Is Here To Change The Way People Donate Mattresses

Adopt-a-Bed, a new nonprofit, may only have opened its doors in January but the team is determined to make big strides in the world mattress donations.

I used to be in the mattress retail business. I met so many people who couldn’t afford basic bedding. She explained this to me over the telephone. It was an accident that I began a sell one/give one program in which every mattress I sold, I would give one to another person. I eventually gave more than I was selling.

Emma Petersen is the Adopt-a-Bed volunteer coordinator.

She came up with the Adopt-a-Bed concept, which gives underserved communities access to high-quality sleep products in a variety of ways.

Donors can sign up for either a monthly or yearly subscription through the gifting programPetersen and her staff can purchase one mattress. This equates to either a blanket, mattress cover, or equivalent to a pillow.. After they have chosen the amount they wish to donate, they choose the cause that they would like to support. This could include well-known organizations such as Ronald McDonald House or Salvation Army. Adopt-aBed funnels 100% of the money or products to these organizations.

This program is not the only one. There’s also a Buy One Give One initiative that harkens back to Petersens initial foray into mattress-giving. It works as follows:Participants can purchase the Adopt-a-Bed mattress on the nonprofits’ website. The org then donates a similar bed to someone in dire need..

Petersen explained to me that we like to think of ourselves a charity’s charity. Although we are managed locally, we also serve national, which means that we partner with other organizations throughout the country. Our donors have the opportunity to make tangible, direct donations to charities that they believe in.

The results so far are amazing.Peteresen claims that Adopt-a-Bed donated 1,100 mattresses in its first 90-days and she hopes the charity can soon increase that number to 13,000 beds.Monthly.She hopes to then set up a mattress recycling program in order to catch discarded beds before they end up in landfills.

We try to get everyone a mattress. This is true regardless of whether the person reached us via our website or if they are part of an organization. Because we believe everyone deserves to sleep well, we don’t consider anyone qualified for a bed.
